How to stay cool and take care of yourself during the summer months.

If you haven't noticed by now, the summer months in Pennsylvania are typically...HOT! You would think that being in the north, temperatures and humidity wouldn't be high, but it's always Pennsylvania's hidden surprise for visitors. As a home care patient or caregiver, you need to be aware of how the summer heat can affect you. Especially if you are a caregiver, you are responsible for your own health and safety and for the health and safety of your patient.

Here are some tips that will help you!

Stay hydrated - Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. Water. Water. Water.

Keep an eye on your medicines - Some medicines can have different affects during the summer months and are affected by the heat. Consult with your physician to understand more.

Wear comfortable clothing - Loose fitted, cotton clothing is best.

Apply sunscreen - Need we say more?

Stay indoors - Try your best to stay indoors, especially during the mid-day hours, if it is not necessary to do so. Patients and caregivers should work together to adjust daily routines according to the summer weather.

Communicate - If you haven't had a conversation with your caregiver/patient, do not be afraid to do so. Gather necessary information, consult your physician, and make adjustments where necessary. Communication is really the key between caregivers and patients to insure that expectations are clear.
